HISTORY

What is now Kloof was once open farmland settled by early Natal Colonists. The village proper was originally a farm called Tafelberg owned by Pioneer Andries van Tonderen. He sold it in 1844 to William Cowie who gave his name to Cowies Hill just outside Durban. A year later the farm was bought by William Swan Field whose name still lives on in the village.

Apart from Fields Hill there is also the Fields Shopping Centre – one of his descendants retired hotelier and affable local character John Field still lives in the area.

As is so often the case the development of the Village all started with the arrival of the railway line and the Kloof Station which was built back in 1896. To this day the Kloof Railways Station, now converted to a popular meeting place called Stokers, is one of the villagesnmore popular meeting places.
